First 4-H Embryology Lesson & Candling at Pulaski Elementary

Morgan Paulette working with students from Mrs. Alls' Classroom

Morgan Paulette, Pulaski ANR Extension Agent, and Chris Lichty, Pulaski 4-H Extension Agent, with the Virginia Cooperative Extension - Pulaski Office, spent the morning at Pulaski Elementary School with five third grade and one fourth grade classroom for the first 4-H Embryology Lesson and Egg Candling.  Each classroom was provided a Brinsea Seven Egg Automatic Incubator by the Virginia Cooperative Extension for the project and seven eggs were set last week in each classroom incubator, Wednesday, April 19.

Morgan and Chris talked about the parts of egg with the students and cracked an unfertilized egg to provide a more “hands-on” educational experience.  Morgan and Chris then candled each classrooms eggs showing the students the chick development on Day 6 of the incubation period.  Fifteen days are left in the 21 day incubation period with hatching to occur beginning May 9.

Morgan and Chris will return two more times to each classroom, once next week for the second lesson and last candling before hatching, and then in two weeks to talk about the parts of the chicken, with the chicks in hand, and then how chickens are used in the agriculture industry from layers to meat chickens.

Spring 2017 Tractor Supply Company 4-H Paper Clover Campaign

The Spring 2017 Tractor Supply Company 4-H Paper Clover Campaign  is scheduled for April 26 - May 7.

And we, Pulaski County 4-H, need our 4-H community (4-H'ers, parents, adult leaders, teachers, school staff and community partners) to show support by signing up.  We plan to greet customers, help them to their cars with purchases, return buggies inside the store, help inside the store if needed, and just be there with a friendly smiling face to maybe recruit a new member or two. We can even set up our displays showcasing "What We Do" and offer Homemade Baked Goods for additional donations.

We need a minimum of two 4-H'ers and two parents/adults to work weeknights, 5:30 - 7pm, and Saturday, 1 - 3pm, and Sunday, 1 - 3pm, and then from 1 - 7pm on the last Sunday.

Each of us is asked to participate at least once.

Tractor Supply Stores who have 4-H club participation in-store during the 4-H Paper Clover Campaign raise an average of 40% more than stores who don't.

And for those 4-H'ers that come out to represent Pulaski County 4-H, you will earn credit to attend leadership events for Fall 2017 and 2018 such as 4-H Camp, 4-H Day at the State Capitol, 4-H Congress, Teen Leadership Retreats, to name some.  4-H'ers will also be entered in gift card drawings to Tractor Supply aned 4-H Clubs will be entered for gift cards to Tractor Supply and gift certificates to the 4-H Mall.

And for the Fall 2016 Tractor Supply Company 4-H Paper Clover Campaign we raised almost $1,100 for Pulaski County 4-H.  We were ranked in the top 10 in the Nation for 4-H Clover Sales to Transactions, 2nd in the Region, 2nd in the State and 1st in the District. We ask that everyone come out strong to support this great cause for our 4-H program and 4-H clubs.  As you can see we all walk away winners in the end.  And we'd really really like to be recognized Nationally as one of the top 10 stores in the nation.

Look forward to seeing you at Tractor Supply Company - Pulaski.
Cheers, Mr. L and Mrs. Hurst
